About Us

Established in 2005, The Sydney Globalist is an undergraduate international affairs magazine published bi-annually by students at the University of Sydney, Australia. The magazine aspires to publish the best in student ideas, writing and analysis on international affairs. Its audience encompasses students, academics, analysts, civil society, opinion-makers and the foreign policy community.

The Sydney Globalist forms part of the Global21 Network, a network of student-run international-affairs magazines at premier universities around the globe. Founded at Yale University in 2005, Global21 seeks to connect high-achieving students around the world in ways that will remain with them as they become tomorrow’s leaders in business, the non-profit sector, and government. Since its founding, Global21 has established chapters at Yale University, Peking University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Sydney, the University of Toronto, the University of Cape Town, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, St. Stephen’s University in New Delhi, Bogazici University in Istanbul, and Sciences Po of Paris.

New Honorary Board Member

The Hon. Catherine Branson QC

The Sydney Globalist would like to warmly welcome The Hon. Catherine Branson QC to its Board of Advisers in 2010.

The Hon. Catherine Branson is the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, a position she has occupied since 14 October 2008. At the time of her appointment, she was a judge of the Federal Court of Australia.

Ms Branson is a past President of the Australian Institute for Judicial Administration and a former member of the Board of Management of IDLO. She is a member of the International Association of Judges and the International Association of Refugee Law Judges. Prior to her appointment as a judge, she practised as a barrister at the Adelaide Bar in South Australia. She was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1992.

Between 1984-89, she was Crown Solicitor of South Australia and the CEO of the South Australian Attorney-General’s Department. Ms Branson holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide. In addition to her role as President, Ms Branson assumed responsibility as Human Rights Commissioner on 12 July 2009.

The Hon. Catherine Branson QC has contributed widely to public discourse on human rights and international affairs.

The Sydney Globalist is honoured to have such a distinguished leader join its Board.
